c43-300 AD Roman copper alloy zoomorphic lion hairpin. The lion's mane is detailed with chevron grooves with linear detail picking out the beast’s ribs. Eyes, nostrils and a slit mouth are apparent on the face. A loop forms the lion’s tail. The animal stands on a narrow cylindrical pedestal decorated with latitudinal grooves. The hole in the centre would be inserted into an iron rod. Hairpins of this type are commonly found at Roman sites though they are more often topped with dogs or seated birds.
