A FRENCH NAPOLEON III LOUIS XVI STYLE ORMOLU MANTEL CLOCKTHE DIAL INSCRIBED FOR LEPAUTE, PARIS, CIRCA 1865The circular eight-day countwheel bell striking movement with anchor escapement regulated by disc bob pendulum incorporating Brocot type regulation to suspension, the 3.5 inch circular slightly convex white enamel Roman numeral dial inscribed Lepaute, H'GER DU ROI to centre and with Arabic five minutes beyond the outer minute track, with fine scroll pierced and engraved gilt brass hands set behind hinged convex glazed bezel engine-milled cast bezel, the richly gilded plinth-form case with twin handled urn surmount adorned with husk swags set on a tablet, over ogee panel moulded front applied with acanthus leaves to upper quadrants and generous ribbon-tied laurel spray to lower margin continuing up to envelope to dial, the sides also panelled and applied with acanthus scrolls to lower margin and the rear with conforming quadrant mounts over domed fretwork scroll pierced hinged cover for the movement, the skirt base with projecting laurel wreath upper mouldings and bell flower decorated scroll panel infill, on leaf cast bun feet.33cm (13ins) high, 19cm (7.5ins) wide, 11cm (4.25ins) deep. Provenance: Wildenstein & Co Ltd, purchased 2nd April 1962.

Movement is complete with no visible evidence of alteration or noticeable replacements. The going train will beat for a few seconds before stopping, the strike train is working; the movement is fairly dirty/discoloured a clean/service is required. The right-hand winding hole has some uneven wear around the aperture otherwise appears free from visible defects. The case is in very good original condition with strong gilding with light overall mellowing and spotting. The urn surmount has a slight lean backwards and the bezel glass has been re-set with some glue residue visible.Clock has pendulum and a winding key.
