(BOWER ARCHIBALD)  Six Letters from A- B- to Father Sheldon, Provincial of the Jesuits in England. 1756.  Bound with 6 others re. the Archibald Bower controversy. Calf, top brd. & early leaves det but present, browning to margins of early leaves of the 1st item. 1756-1757. Bower (author of The Lives of the Popes), born a Scots Catholic and "a man who little regarded principle when he had the prospect of improving his fortune"  denied authorship of these letters but they were clearly established to have been by him.
