λ An early 18th century ivory fan, with carved ivory guards and plain sticks, the guards carved at the top with a single figure of a gentleman in period dress raising his glass aloft, the leaf mounted à l’anglaise fashion and hand painted in body colour with a biblical or mythological scene of a woman in fine attire regarding a ring upon her finger, a soldier beside her, above her, in the sky is a crown from which emanates an arrow which points directly at her, the verso plain, mother of pearl washers at the rivet, length 27.5cm
