** WAR OF THE AUSTRIAN SUCCESSION - LETTER EX PRISONER IN DEVON TO FRANCE; Remarkable 6 Aug. 1747 EL (full typed transcript) from the Captain of a French Merchant Ship that had been captured on 9 July by an English Warship while he was en route from the "Cape of St. Domingo" (now Haiti + the Dominican Republic, which he had left on 4 May) - presumably to France who was then in Prison in "Tavistock" (Devon). He briefly describes how he was taken prisoner and lists the cargo of sugar that he lost; he then states how much money he needs, etc. The letter to Nantes was clearly carried by private ship from Plymouth to Bayonne; it has a partly fine small h.s. "de Bayonne" and m/s "10" charge on the front. Very rare Prisoner letter from this early period. [See MFPWE, p. 38.]Cross Reference: MILITARY - P.O.W. MAIL, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, HAITI, DEVON
