A FINE AND RARE ELIZABETHAN OAK CAQEUTEUSE ARMCHAIR, BECKHAM WORKSHOP, SALISBURY, CIRCA 1580-1600. The high arched cresting with characteristic Salisbury S scroll motif over a leafy fanned arcade and triple oval interlaces, above an elongated back panel carved with floral quatrefoils, further S scroll arcade and arched fan, centred on a circular flower flanked by acanthus palmettes, the lower back rail with interlace rope twist. Having angle splayed caqueteuse arms finishing in outward turned cusps above baluster and reel uprights, with a moulded single board polygonal seat, having S scroll carved front and side rails joined by gun barrel baluster legs and plain lower stretchers, the rear with chamfered panel and moulded lower rail. Retaining an untouched high colour and surface patination with natural craqueleur throughout, 119cm high 65.5cm wide 46cm deep seat height 46cm Provenance: Purchased from Victor Chinnery personal collection, mid 1980s.
