A WWI death plaque to William Charles Pearce in a bespoke Newlyn copper frame. Decorated with laurel leaves, stamped mark, diameter 19cm. Pearce was born in the Parish of Newlyn in the late 1870s to a fishing family. He was a skilled carpenter and rope maker and was able to utilise these skills when he joined the many Cornish miners who emigrated to the Transvaal in South Africa in the early 20th century. He also took up Cornish wrestling and became the champion Cornish wrestler in South Africa.
