Hagel studied at the Vienna and Munich Academy. The versatile talented artist worked from 1913 as an illustrator for books and magazines. He designed some together with the architect P. L. Troost luxury liners from the Lloyd company and was also able to worked as a successful set designer. Already in the mid-1920s brought one British magazine published a paper on his work, which his international artistic position underpinned. In 1930 he returned to his native city of Vienna, where he was active until 1938, after that he worked in great seclusion.
Alfred Hagel's graceful and elegant scenes from the 1920s and 1930s exude a very unique charm, depicting the sunny side of life in an imaginative way. His talent for narrative and pointed depictions, in which elements from everyday life are cleverly combined with motifs from literature and mythology, can also be clearly seen in the subject shown here. The young bride, who is being prepared for the wedding by her mother, is full of expectations.
