two compartments with removable lidded boxes, the frieze with a silk damask-lined slide above a drawer, flanked by further drawers, on cabriole legs with foliate sabots, with two blue bordered labels "Sir James Horlick", stamped twice "B. Durand" and "JME", 74cm high x 93cm wide x 53cm deep

Sir James (d. 1921) was born in Gloucestershire and founded the Horlicks drinks business with his brother in Chicago. He returned to Britain in the early 20th century when he was knighted. His third son, also James, inherited the baronetcy from his older brother Peter on the latter’s death in 1958. For his actions in World War I, Sir James (4th Bt.) was awarded the Military Cross, the Greek Military Cross, the Serbian Order of the White Eagle and was appointed Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur. After the Second World War he lived at Achamore House on Gigha, in the Western Isles of Scotland.
