Former Bristol Zoo Gardens - the original carved stone bust of the iconic Bristol Zoo Gardens' gorilla 'Alfred,' from the former Bristol Zoo Gardens, and as displayed around the site in several locations over the decades. Undertaken by Roy Smith in 1949. Carved from a death mask made of Alfred after he passed away in 1948. Featuring engraved details to a solid bronze plaque to the base: 'Alfred - Bristol Zoo's Famous Lowland Gorilla - He Arrived On 5th September 1930 And Died On 9th March 1948 - This Bust By Roy Smith RWA 1949'. Measures approx: H41cm x W35cm x D38cm.


As displayed around Bristol Zoo Gardens since its creation in 1949, and most recently housed in the public entrance to the Gorilla enclosure, but was at one time situated outside the Monkey Temple. An iconic and important piece of Bristol Zoo Gardens history, and one of the most iconic statues in modern Bristol history. Alfred the Gorilla (c1928 to 1948) arrived at Bristol Zoo in 1930 and became a popular attraction and animal celebrity. His fame grew to international proportions during the Second World War and after his death he remained an important mascot for the city of Bristol, with his taxidermy form displayed in Bristol Museum and Art Gallery ever since.
