£1,200
Charles I (1625-1649), Civil War Issues, AR Threepence 1646, Declaration type. Bridgnorth-on-Severn mint (previously Lundy) mm: plumelet/–. Crowned bust left, plumelet to left, III to right, rev. REL : PRO :/ LEG : AN :/ LIB : PAR :/ 1646; above, plume between ornamental scroll. 1.55gm. (Morrieson, Lundy A-1; Brooker 1134; N 2526; S 3043). About Extremely Fine, well struck (no weak areas) and richly toned, rare. Better coin than the Cope specimen. For many years, up until around 2001, this mint was attributed to ‘Lundy Island’, however as the Royalist forces held Bridgenorth-on-Severn from 28 February 1646 to 26 April 1646, it was suggested by Boon in SCBI (No.33 p.xli) that Bridgenorth-on-Severn was a more likely candidate as the mint for these coins, rather than Lundy, and this is now, by and large, accepted.
