Scotland. Silver penny. Alexander III. 2nd coinage. 1230-1286. (From the Beaumont Hoard which was found in 1884 when two labourers were cutting a main drain through a field near the Tile Kiln. They found a stone about nine inches below the surface and beneath this they found a mass of silver coins. These coins, lots 271 to 287 were those retained by the distinguished local antiquarian and author R. S. Ferguson FSA. Ferguson was a relative of the owner of the land on which the coins were found and he wrote a paper on the find for the Cumberland and Westmorland Antiquarian and Archaeological Society. He believed that the coins had been deposited c.1364 - 1370)
