After Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830) British. A Three Quarter Length Portrait of Charles Malton as a Child, Watercolour, pencil, red and brown chalks, on paper with J Whatman watermark, 10" x 7.85" (25.4 x 19.7cm). Provenance: 1st Baron Coutts; Burdett-Coutts collection, sold at Lawrences of Crewkerne, Circa 1978; thence into a private collection where it remains to the present day. Notes: Born in 1788, Charles Malton was the son of Thomas Malton the Younger (1748-1804) an architectural draughtsman. He was a student at the Royal Academy Schools (Architecture) from 15th January 1807 and won a silver medal for architecture at the Royal Academy in 1807. He later went on to work with Sir John Soane R.A. and assisted with designs for the buildings of The Bank of England. There is a version in the Princeton University Art Museum (No.2014-24). There has been a difference of opinion in the attribution therefore we have catalogued it as 'after'. It remains our view this is an arresting and high quality portrait by a master hand.
