A Waterloo Medal to 'John Stokes 2nd Batt 69th Foot'. *Notes- The 2nd Battalion 69th (South Lincolnshire) Foot was an inexperienced battalion with very little Peninsula campaign experience. In addition it had a higher percentage of men who had joined ranks underage and many rejoined under the age of twenty at Waterloo. Suffering heavy casualties at Quatre Bras, the 69th were amalgamated with the 33rd to form a square. Private John Stokes was amongst the youngest men in the Company aged only 17. He was from Kidderminster, Worcestershire and had enlisted in 1813. He would go on to serve a total of 23 years, being discharged in 1836.
