Luftwaffe silver presentation schnapps cup to Battle of Britain Ace Hans-Karl Mayaer on being awarded the Knight's Cross: Engraved ‘Hpt. Hans-Karl / Mayer / Zum / 20 Luftseig [Hauptmann Hans-Karl Mayer for 20 Aerial Victories] to one side and ‘J. G. 53 / R. K. / 3.9.40’ opposite. Base stamped with silver marks and ‘800’. Such cups were issued to Luftwaffe pilots on their receipt of the Ritterkreuz. Mayer first achieved fame by becoming an ‘Ace‘ for the Condor Legion during the Spanish Civil War. He was credited with five enemy aircraft on 14th May, 1940, becoming an ‘ace in a day‘, and was awarded the RK on 3rd September 1940 after his 20th ‘kill‘. He fought in the Battle of Britain and died on 17th October, 1940, with a score of 39 aerial victories.
