Sir Clements Markham KCB FRS FRSGS (President of the Royal Geographical Society) (1830-1916), an original hand written and signed letter from Clements Markham to Cyril Longhurst, secretary to the British National Antarctic Expedition, the letter dated 24th June 1907 on headed paper, sent from 21 Eccleston Square, the letter reading as follows: "I want another report to be type written, and I confess, could you kindly get it done for me. Will you excuse the short notice and come to dinner at 8 tomorrow (Tuesday June 25) Nansen was coming but the king, at the last moment, has ordered him to come to the Duchess of Manchester to meet H.M. and the Queen. I thought, as you are alone, you could come. There will be the [?] and the McCarthys.
Yours affectionately
Clements Markham"
The Nansen mentioned in the letter would have been Fridtjof Wedel-Jarlsberg Nansen (Norwegian 1861 – 1930), a famous explorer known to have given advice to Robert Falcon Scott on polar equipment and transport, prior to the 1901–04 Discovery expedition
