JACOB HUYSMANS (C.1630-1696). His circle. PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN, POSSIBLY JOHN CHURCHILL, 1st DUKE OF MARLBOROUGH (1650-1722). Standing long half length, wearing armour and a red coat, his hand upon a helmet, a battle scene beyond, oil on canvas 124 x 101cm. * The traditional identification of the sitter as George Monck, 1st Duke of Albemarle (1608-1670) is not obviously plausible as the similarity to known depictions of Monck is slight. Provenance: Collection of the late Prince Herman of Saxe Weimar Eisenach, Count von Ostheim (1886-1964); thence by descent until sold in these rooms on October 20th 2006, lot 1525; Private Collection.
Replaced stretchers; lined; associated retouching; paint losses; some frosted varnish; needs a clean.
