PACKET LETTER TO GB (FORWARDED TO FRANCE) WITH RARE LONDON CROWNED OVAL "INDIA/PACKET LETTER": 4 Dec. 1818 EL from "Ile Maurice" to London & endorsed "Forwarded by Y.[our] O.[bedient] S.[ervants]/S[andermann]. G[ooden]. & F[orster]." - sent by them on to Bordeaux. Front exceptionally having a mostly fine crowned oval "INDIA/PACKET LETTER" ds (Rob. InP2; 1817-8 only) slightly overstruck by "ANGLETERRE" rather than the usual oval "MAURITIUS/PACKET LETTER" ds - perhaps this letter was posted at the last minute in Port Louis so there was no time to datestamp it there, hence the similar London mark? Reverse with London Foreign Branch backstamps. Very unusual usage on a redirected cover. Exhibition Item. Cross Reference: FRANCE, FORWARDING AGENTS
