29th (Worcestershire) Foot Attributed Officers 1869-78 Shako. A good example attributed to Lieutenant Arthur Henry Kirwan Ward. Dark blue melton cloth body and crown, patent leather peak. Two bands of quarter inch gold lace to top of the crown, one row around the base. To the front a fire gilt plate comprising a laurel wreath surmounted by a Crown. Within the wreath the Garter, within the Garter the number 29. White over red wool pom-pom supported by an ornate gilt holder with VR Cypher. Complete with leather backed chin chain supported by gilt rose pattern bosses and at the rear by a gilt lion's mask. Crimson silk topped leather sweatband (silk A/F) and retaining its crimson silk lining. The sweatband with ink name A.H.K. Ward. The gilt to the plate and furniture remains bright. To the front of the shako are two moth holes that have been repaired with further moth nips to the crown. ... Accompanied by original storage tin with engraved name plate "A.H.K. Ward 29th Regt". Tin with surface rusting. Lieutenant Arthur Henry Kirwan Ward Educated at Marlborough College and entered Sandhurst in 1876. Granted a commission in the 29th Regiment he sailed to India. In 1879 his death from Typhoid fever was reported in the College magazine. It is believed thi helmet is illustrated on page 41 of "Badges of the Worcestershire Regiment" by R.W. Bennett.
