A RARE SMALL TUDOR OAK ROMAYNE CARVED BOARDED COFFER, HENRY VIII, CIRCA 15301540. The rare English renaissance small boarded oak coffer, the single plank lid with notched decoration to the ends above a front carved with twin romayne portrait faces featuring a helmeted male and a female with ornate bonnet, having a separate carved Tudor Rose and quatrefoil motif beneath each, the front and rear boards overhanging the arch shaped ends, retaining original decorated lock plate with signs of its original tin finish. Of excellent original pale colour and surface. 87cm wide 46cm deep 57cm high Footnote - It is more commonplace to see joined Oak coffers with Romayne portrait panels, genuine plank chests with Romayne portraits are far scarcer. On English examples they are much more likely to be portraits of the owners than on equivalent European ones, which are more derivative.
