A BRITISH SECOND WORLD WAR/POST-WAR WICKER STORAGE BASKET, top of basket covered in tarp with painted writing, 'Capt. Wilkins (Intcorps) / Singapore to / Southampton Per / SS" Empire Trooper"/ 3 Hold'; the Empire Trooper, the ship which at one point carried this basket to Singapore, was constructed by Vulkan Werke, Hamburg, in 1922; it was seized by the Royal Navy having been spotted by the HMS Belfast on 9 October 1939 near the Faroe Islands. Damaged by German naval shelling, the ship survived and continued service until 9 April 1955, where it went into port at Southhampton. UK Ministry of Transport documents from the National Archives indicate Southhampton-Singapore was a regular route for the Empire Trooper, with the ship making stops at locations such as Colombo, Aden, Port Said, Tripoli, and Gibraltar, 76x42x47cm.
