AN IMPORTANT GROUP OF LIMOGES CHAMPLEVE ENAMEL GEMELLIONS FROM A PRIVATE COLLECTION.
Limoges patinated gilt-copper and polychrome champlevé enamel gemellion, circa 1200-1250, of shallow circular form, decorated with a shield-shaped escutcheon with the French Royal Arms, reserved on a scroll pattern ground within a circular cartouche, within a border depicting six panels of huntsmen and hunting scenes, flanked by scrollwork and alternating with foliate motifs, the reverse engraved with a central flowerhead roundel and ribbons terminating in fleur-de-lys, 22.5cm diam.
Provenance
By repute Hever Castle, Kent and thence by descent to the present owner.
The combination of the French Royal Arms the figural ornament on the border of this lot are closely related to a gemellion in the collection of the Louvre, Paris (MR 2649). Another with the French Royal Arms and figural border is in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, (accession no. 6983-1860). The pose of the figures and style of hunting scenes is also similar to the medallions seen on the Coffret de Saint Louis see M. Gauthier, B. Barriere et. al., Enamels of Limoges 1100-1350, The Metropolitan Museum, New York, 1996, Cat. no. 123, pp. 360-363.
