Giovanni Lorenzo D’Anania - AFRICA
Venice: Melchior Sessa, (1582) 1598
Copperplate engraving, centerfold, full colour, lightly tanned, pencilled note in margin, two small holes in centerfold, paper watermarked, title at top with triangular period, top left corner: Descrittione dellâ?? Africa; top right corner: Libro Secondo. 96; verso: Italian text, heavy tanning; framed
from Girolamo Ruscelliâ??s Geografia di Claudio Tolomeo
17,8 by 24,6cm
The map has a complicated history. It is similar to Boteroâ??s map of 1595 and Maginiâ??s map of 1596 (amongst others) and is often confused with those. The keys to its identification are the 's' of Aegiptus to the left of the Nile and Dama (not Dauma) in West Africa. The line encircling Africa and the triangular period after the title characterize the second state of D'Anania's map.
The map closely follows the 1570 Ortelius map of Africa. For example, Zanzibar is on the southwest coast of Africa and the Niger River is fed by three lakes.
