A late 18c eight day longcase clock, the 36cm arched dial signed Jas. Ross, Glasgow and having silver chapter ring, flat engraved spandrels, date and seconds rings and a name boss in the arch. The movement has anchor escapement and rack striking on a bell. it is contained in a mahogany case with flat topped hood with dentil moulding around the top edge. The hood door is flanked by extraordinary free standing rope twist columns which stand forward of the hood door and have supporting arms to retain their tops protruding from the hood. The rectangular trunk door has a line inlay around it and is flanked by inset rope twist quarter columns. The base is plain and has a wavy double plinth. Clock stands 216cm h overall.
The dial is in good condition. the movement is lacking one pulley and the line is broken but is otherwise complete but dusty. The case is in good condition with one small piece of veneer missing to the base.
