Early 20th c: French bronze plaquette (85 x 50 mm) by Ernesta Robert-Merignac showing two foilists performing the Grand Salute, entitled Le Salut Des Armes; reverse shows an 18th c. fencer holding a 3-cornered hat in his left hand. [Ernesta Robert-Merignac (1858-1933) was the daughter of the fencing master Georges Robert and the wife of the fencing master Emile Merignac. She became a medal engraver at the Paris mint in 1903 and exhibited four plaquettes at the 1905 Salon of the Société des Artistes Français. In 1911 she received the sculpture prize at the Salon des Femmes Peintres et Sculpteurs. Her medals of fencing scenes are among the most attractive of their kind.]
