Mm: 63 x 55 cm in frame.
Provenance: given as a gift from the artist to a prominent art dealer in the 1980s.
Markey, now well established as one of Ireland's leading names in art, had brushes with careers of all kinds, but it was to art that Markey dedicated nearly all of his life. He ultimately has become one of the most recognisable and consistently saleable painters in Ireland. Although he originally lived and worked in Belfast, Markey frequently travelled the world in search of the images that would become iconic in his paintings. His trips to Spain and Africa provided stunning, simplistic images of buildings and life from around the world, but it was Ireland that captured Markey's imagination most of all. His paintings depict the countryside with flat, muted colour and in his almost abstract, almost geometrical compositions, he seems to capture the easy relationship between beauty and sadness. He exhibited widely at venues including the Ulster Academy of Arts, Belfast Museum and Art Gallery, at The Irish Exhibition of Living Art, Oriel Gallery and Magee Gallery. His paintings can be found in the collection of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Ulster Museum, Queens University and the VHI. Markey Robinson's work featured in 'Ireland: Her People and Landscape' exhibition (2012) and 'Ulster Artists' exhibition (2010) There is a video of this lot on our tic tok, Facebook and instagram page under South Dublin Auction.
This is my favourite Markey, the two wishbone roads, the 7 shawlies and the man carrying wood and the boats in the bay there is lots going on and the colours are super vibrant, this was a personal gift from Markey to a well know Dublin art dealer and it has been In private hands ever since. Its a super piece and will be a great investment for the future.
