A circa mid-late 16thC taxidermy preserved American Alligator, stuffed with straw, lacks teeth and tip of tail, head is in quite a skeletal condition, and feet are slightly mangled, three holes in the tail, approx. 230cm long.
Provenance: Sand House, Sidbury, East Devon - this alligator was sent back from the New World by two members of the Huyshe family to their family family home; it was recorded in 1724, as 'an alligator of great antiquity' in an inventory of the house contents; it has remained resident in Sand House, nailed to the top of oak panelling in the Tudor entrance hall, until June 2022 when the Huyshe family sold Sand.
