Joana Saramago is a documentary and landscape photographer from Lisbon, Portugal, now based
in London. Her work weaves together human stories with the powerful, often understated beauty
of natural and urban landscapes. Drawing inspiration from the contrasts between Portugal’s coastal
scenery and London’s urban textures, her images offer an evocative perspective that resonates with a
universal sense of connection and belonging.
Joana graduated as a visual designer in 2002, yet her enduring passion for photography has always
driven her creative journey. She studied photography at the renowned Instituto Português de
Fotografia, further honing her skills and approach.
Her background in design informs her photographic work, imbuing it with a refined sense of
composition and detail. Over the years, Joana’s love for capturing real-life stories and landscapes
grew from a personal pursuit into a profound professional calling. She was a trainee photojournalist
at Lusa News Agency, European Press Agency before moving to London to work as a freelance
photographer.
Joana taught photography and post-production at the London Institute of Photography from 2017
to 2023, and she continues to share her expertise as a guest lecturer at the Photographer Foundation.
In 2021, Joana participated in The Sicily Photo Masterclass with esteemed photographers Aaron
Schuman, Katy Hundertmark, and Mimi Mollica, further enriching her documentary approach.
Recently, in 2023, her work was exhibited in the Gibellina PhotoRoad Festival as part of the Fracture
collective project. Her dedication to her craft is reflected in each of her projects, blending technical skill
with a deep, genuine storytelling approach.
The images presented in this series “Volcanic Landscapes” were shot during a week in September 2020
on the island of São Miguel, in the Azores archipelago, Portugal.
This series captures the unique volcanic geological nature of the islands, with their striking
black sand beaches and pumice-strewn landscapes unique to those islands.
