MAIL FROM CHINA DURING THE SECOND OPIUM WAR; cSep. 1857 env. (defects) endorsed 'via Southampton' to Rochester, Kent franked pair & strip of four 1d Red (few faults) tied or cancelled by London '50' numerals. From Lt C.W.Burton (and from the same correspondence illustrated by Osborne in Naval Officers Letters at page 9) with London and Rochester d.s. on rear. Burton was serving in the Calcutta moored off Wantung Is. Burton was adjutant of the Royal Marines B battalion which took part in the successful attack on Canton later that year. Scarce and unusual. Ex Willcocks. Illustrated in The Royal Marines at page 42
