SEVEN YEARS WAR - RARE INGOING COVER TO P.O.W. IN WINCHESTER + MADEIRA COVER TO COFFEE HOUSE; Fine 13 Sept. 1760 EL (in French) from London "To Mr. Joseph Fournier, Prisoner of War, Winchester" charged "3[d]" but also having the manuscript "M" of the Winchester P.O.W. Agent on the flap. Illustrated in Renollaud (p.50); one of only 6 recorded covers to Winchester POWs and one of less than a dozen POW covers known to POWs in Britain during the Seven Years War. Interesting contents ref. postal rates; "I have in front of me the two letters which you have done me the honour to send... Your letters for France & Spain are en route. I must tell you that I have seen that you have written several times to your friend in Madrid; you should not be surprised if he did not receive your letters, because I suppose you ignored the need to prepay them and that you did not do it; it costs 18d sterling postage for a single letter, it also costs 10d to prepay each letter that you send me for France and also 3d from Winchester to London for each one. I tell you this so that when your acquaintances give you letters to convey them to France, you know what it costs." The writer also says that he has sent 2 guineas for the addressee to Plymouth. Plus 24 Nov. 1762 EL from Madeira to "Jamaica Coffee House, London" charged "4" with "FAL/MOUTH" mark (carried by French ship). (2 covers) Cross Reference: COFFEE HOUSES, MILITARY - P.O.W. MAIL, HAMPSHIRE, SPAIN
