R. S. and Mr. Isaac Dalby. For W. Faden, Geographer to His Majesty, and to His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. Three volumes giving an account of the groundbreaking work that led to the setting up of what is now known as The Ordnance Survey. A key work in this genre with engraved plates showing actual trigonometrical instruments used in the survey. All three volumes are light blue linen quarter bound on board with decorative marbled edges to the leaves. Vol. 1 published 1799, illustrated with 21 copper plates. Vol. 2 published 1801, Trigonometrical Survey 1797 – 1799, illustrated with 7 copper plates. Vol. 3 published 1811, Trigonometrical Survey 1801 – 1809, by Lieutenant Colonel William Mudge of the Royal Artillery, F. R. S. and Captain Thomas Colby, of the Royal Engineers. Contains a general map of England and Wales, showing the entire trigonometrical survey of both countries, plus many other plates showing details of surveys. Note: The first OS map of Kent was published in 1801. The Dorset OS map was published in 1811. It took until the 1870s before maps of all the counties of England and Wales were published by the OS. It was a hugely demanding task performed with astounding accuracy
Provenance: From the collection of David Beaton, local historian, retired academic and author of Dorset Maps
