AN INTERESTING PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM FROM H.M.S. CRESCENT INCLUDING IMAGES TAKEN DURING THE CAPTAINCY OF H.R.H. DUKE OF YORK IN 1898
comprising approximately 85 sepia and black and white images, many 8 x 11in., topographical views including Halifax, the Nile? with a wrecked paddle steamer, an ice-bound corvette, several group shots including an officer group with Admiral Charles Beresford with his bulldog Kora; Crescent underway, several views of the Duke and Duchess of York with Prince Edward (later Edward VIII) as a child, several interesting views of the Duke's cabins and officers mess, the Portuguese Royal Family aboard H.M.S. Majestic, a profile of H.M. Yacht Enchantress, a busy day at the Henley regatta etc., all contained in album initialled 'G.W.B' to cover and containing several loose press clippings at the back -- 11 x 15in. (28 x 38cm.)
The initials on the album cover 'G.W.B.' may refer to George Warner Ball, the surgeon aboard Crescent at the time of the Duke and Duchess of York's visit (see inv. no RCIN 2426491 in the Royal Collection that has various autographs of the officers on board Crescent given to the Duchess of York and includes G. W. Ball). The Duke of York (later King George V) was Captain of H.M.S. Crescent from 8th June - 26th August 1898. According to the Royal Collection, the Royal images were taken by Chief Petty Officer Thomas McGregor (1862-?1902).
Front cover and several pages detached, images in good condition, pages now time stained.
