Santiago Arcos Y Megalde (1856-1912), Chilean, Watercolour and gouache, c. 1886, Continental Village scene with artist at work, Signed 'Y Arcos 86' lower right. 13 1/2 x 19 5/8'' One of the leading figures of the Spanish School of painting in Paris in the later part of the 19thC, and was a pupil of Leon Bonnat. He typically painted Andalucian and Basque scenes as well as Orientalist subjects and Portraits. This watercolour depicts the corner of a continental village with children and a woman gathered around a seated artist whilst painting, it has to be noted that the artist depicted bears more than a passing resemblance to Santiago Y Arcos Megalde himself!
