CONAN DOYLE SIR ARTHUR.  The Sign of the Four or The Problem of the Sholtos. Lippincott`s Monthly Magazine for February 1890 containing The Sign of the Four with frontis. & title running from p.145 to p.223. Price "25 cts". 24pp of adverts dated "Philadelphia, February, 1890" at the front (no ads. at end), concluding with VIII pp "With the Wits". Original publisher`s printed wrappers with adverts. A good example of this work in a late quarter red morocco slip case. First appearance in print of the second Sherlock Holmes story, American issue. Gibson and Green note "in the American issue of the magazine the frontispiece faces a special title-page (as here) and is therefore considered by some to constitute the first edition." This, believed to be the 2nd issue thereof, contains adverts dated "February 1890". The survival of this in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in the original wrappers is rare.
