Casualty brother's WW1 BWMs to S.Lt W.V. Gilbert R.N.V.R. and 2 Lieut G.G. Gilbert extremely fine. Wilfred Valentine Gilbert was killed in action with Nelson Bn RND on 3rd June 1915 in Galliopli and with no known grave is commemorated on a Special Memorial in Skew Bridge Cemetery. With copied CWGC, RNR record sheet and De Ruvignys Roll of Honour, he was born 1889, commissioned 7/10/14. De Ruvigny states he was with the first party to land in Gallipoli 25/4/15, four times wounded whilst carrying ammunition to the firing line, KIA whilst superintending the digging of a trench linking up the firing line of the Naval Division and the 42nd Division, the enemy trench at that time being 250 yards distant and 1200 yards SSW of Achi Baba. The Nelson men got between the enfilading Turks and the right of the Lancashire Division, joined up the line and dug themselves in under fire on a front of 500 yards. His CO wrote, he was wounded through the nose on 3rd May. On the 1st June he had a very narrow escape, a large shell bursting within a few yards of him, I am glad to say he was unhurt. On the 4th June he was shot through the head whilst superintending some work in the firing line. Gilbert Garnet Gilbert was killed in action aged 18 with 9th Bn Royal Lancaster Regt on 18th March 1918 and is buried in Doiran Military Cemetery. With copied CWGC, Soldiers Died, 1901 census and De Ruvignys Roll of Honour, he was born 1899, joined Inns of Court OTC 30/9/15, commissioned in Dorset Regt 15/12/16, served in Salonika from 18/1/17.
