A RARE AND LARGE 17TH CENTURY BRONZE MORTAR, ATTRIBUTED TO WILLIAM CUERDON, YORKSHIRE, CIRCA 1655-75. With four lug handles, two plain and rounded, two flat and ribbed, the flared body cast with individual letter triad 'B' over 'B' E', atop a pair of cords, 18cm wide, 12cm high Literature: See Michael Finlay, 'English Decorated Bronze Mortars' (2010), p. 153, pl. 304, for a similar four-handled mortar by William Cuerdon and dated 1653.
