£8,200
A Chinese celadon jade 'four boys' water pot, Qing Dynasty. Of circular form, the top carved with interlocked stylised chilong within two greek key borders, the sides carved with geometric designs, the supports in the form of four boys, with a circular stepped underside, height 2.5cm, diameter 6.8cm. This pot is closely related to the bowls and cups made with similar composition of boys clinging to the rims of the vessel, usually forming the handles. The combination of children decorating vessels appears to have been popular from at least the Song Dynasty. See a similar example illustrated in Compendiums of Collections in the Palace Museum. Jade, vol. 10, Beijing, 2011, no. 152. Private collection of a Parisian lady (1876-1964), whence by family descent to the present South West Cornwall vendor. This is in excellent condition with veins in the stone.
