the bowl finely chased and engraved with a scene of ships, boats, figures and animals within a continuous landscape, centred by a cartouche inscribed ' Presented to, M. A Sinclair, by his Greatly Obliged Friend, G. G. Nicol, Canton 1856' below is a model of a steam ship, possibly HMS Coromandel which sailed Chinese waters in the mid 19th century
