RED "3d" & "1½d" PORT LOUIS MARKS ON 6d OR UNDERPAID 1/- RATE COVERS TO GB "VIA SOUTHAMPTON"; 6 Sept. 1863 env. (overall wrinkling, etc.; small corner fault at top left) sent at the 6d "Via Southampton" rate with 6d tied by mainly fine "B53" numeral to Slough with a very fine red Handstruck "3d" Accountancy Mark alongside (due to GB). But then in London found to be underpaid for the double rate (over ½oz & up to 1oz) and so having a fair London "MORE/TO/PAY" in circle and red boxed "DEFICIENT POSTAGE [6d]/FINE___[3d= 9d, changed to 1/-]" (closed tear) on the front. Rare example of the "3d" mark on an underpaid cover. Plus c.1865 front to Hull "Via Southampton" with 6d Green just tied by "B53" numeral and having very fine strike of the rare red Handstruck "1½d" Accountancy Mark alongside; 1½d due to GB from the 6d rate. Good pair. (2 items) Cross Reference: ACCOUNTANCY MARKS
