** PORCHESTER CASTLE - P.O.W. LETTER SMUGGLED(?) TO FRANCE (WITH ONLY "11" RATE); Fine 24 Dec. 1801 EL (unsealed) from "Claude Finout" in "Soldat du 14th Regiment, Prisonnier de guerre a Portchester" to Billon saying that he has been a POW for about 17 months and asking for 200 francs to be sent via a Paris bank to a London lawyer. The letter is uncensored and the only postal marking is a manuscript "11" charge (i.e. posted 1000 to 1200km; from Morlaix via Paris to Billom) which suggest that it was sent by private means (smuggled?) from England. [See MFPWE, p.142.]Cross Reference: FRANCE, HAMPSHIRE, MILITARY - P.O.W. MAIL
