John Wood (1801–1870) - Portfolio of the Artist's Own Exhibition and Prize Work, comprising Adam and Even Lamenting Over the Dead Body of Abel, Gold Medal Model at the Society of Arts, 1822, signed and dated John Wood Sculp:t /1821, pen-and-ink over pencil on paper, 41 x 28.8cm, mounted; Joseph Expounding the Dreams of Pharaoh's Chief Butler and Baker in Prison. Gold Medal Picture at The Royal Academy, 1825, pen-and-ink over pencil on paper, 37 x 28.5cm; The Ascension, signed, sepia, 60 x 35cm, with a smaller pen-and-ink version, 28 x 12.4cm, mounted with a 1pp ALS, dated 1845, informing Wood that he had successfully competed for the commission, that the work had been chosen as the altarpiece for St. James's church, Bermondsey; The Baptism of Christ in the Jordan, signed and dated 1846, pen-and-ink over pencil, 23 x 31cm, mounted with 1pp ALS, dated 1847, awarding him the £1,000 for the prize; Self-Portrait of the Artist, seated, three-quarter length, with his 1822 Society of Arts prize picture in the background, signed and dated 1840 within the plate, 25.5 x 19.5cm, the mount signed by the artist in black ink; sepia wash preparatory study of figures for Elizabeth in the Tower after the Death of her Sister Queen Mary (exhibited at the RA), signed John Wood/Pinxt, 45.5 x 34.5cm; Psycho wafted by Zephyr to the Valley of Pleasure, sepia wash, signed by the artist in pencil, title and inscribed to verso: [...] The original design by John Wood, made at the Sketching Society, 29.5 x 34cm, contemporary portfolio of quarter-roan over marbled boards, folio (72 x 55.5cm)

John Wood (1801-1870) studied at Henry Sass's and at the RA Schools, being awarded the gold medal for painting at the latter in 1825, and exhibited from 1823-62 at the Royal Academy, the British Institution, and the Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street. As exemplified in this portfolio's select works on paper, Wood was an accomplished painter of portraits, biblical, historical and literary subjects.
