GB. COVERS & POSTAL HISTORY 1790 (31 Mar) letter from R. Cumberland at Tunbridge-Wells, to the Postmaster General, Lord Walsingham, asking for the removal of the current postmaster, Mr. Jasper Sprange, to be replaced by William Knight, and giving, in some detail, his reasons including "Mr Jasper Sprange, our Bookseller & Stationer, is our present postmaster. I have reason to believe his affairs are so circumstanc'd as to render it little likely that he can hold his employ...". From the Herbert Joyce family archive. Joyce was the third secretary of the Post Office and in his "The History of the Post Office" mentions James Sprange, the courtly old Postmaster, who up to the date of his last illness might be seen pacing the Pantiles scrupulously dressed in the costume of the reign of George the second, even to the long ruffles". Several pages of background information accompany includes a full transcript. Lot 1434 (M) [c]
