A JAPANESE FUKUSA DEPICTING A PAIR OF ORIGAMI CRANES, EARLY MEIJI PERIOD (1868-1912). Of rectangular form featuring two origami cranes surrounded by the 'Three Friends of Winter' (pine, bamboo and plum). Cranes symbolise longevity and fidelity as it is believed they mate for life. The design worked in gold wrapped thread along with coloured satin stitch and red 'chirimen' (crepe silk) backing and tassels. 64cm x 53cm. *A fukusa is a panel of silk used to cover a gift placed on a tray when gifts are exchanged between prominent families during important occasions such as weddings, New Year’s, and annual festivals.
