A George III pewter spire flagon, dated 1769

Having a domed lid with pagoda-type knop, a tear-drop pierced chairback thumbpiece, and ‘drape-and drop’ style handle with hooded ball terminal, the tapering straight-sided drum with a high fillet and skirt footrim, and engraved ‘FOR THE CONGREGATION OF FALLSTONE 1769’, hallmarks to rim of ’TC’ (M15013), 69 fl.oz., height 34cm

Provenance: United Reform Church, Falstone, Northumberland. Sold 2013

The hallmarks found on this flagon were used for over a hundred years by various makers. Given the date of the flagon (made prior, although possibly near, 1769) William Charsley (fl.1729-1770), (PS1623) is a likely maker, although Edmund Grove (fl.1753-1777), (PS4116) and Richard Pawson I (fl.1752-1787), (PS7158) should also be considered
