INDIA LETTER/FALMOUTH EX GOVERNOR KING'S GRAND-DAUGHTER + GAZETTE REF. SHIP LETTERS ETC.: 10-19 Nov. 1838 EL (full typed transcript of very long newsy cross-written contents + full research notes) sent "Inland Postage Paid" from "Clovelly" (the MacArthurs' Watsons Bay mansion) to Scotland with red ms "3" and mainly fine red oval "PAID SHIP LETTER/[crown]/* SYDNEY *" ds on the front to Aberdeen with mainly fine red "INDIA LETTER/FALMOUTH" on the flap ("1/8" rate) and a fine London hs "½" Mail Tax mark on the front; carried by the 'Dryade' which left Sydney with "13,000 letters, besides newspapers... the largest mail ever shipped in the Colony" (Sydney Monitor, 3 Dec. 1838 p.2). Written by Philip Gidley King's grand-daughter, Kate Macarthur, with mention of P.O. problems; "I shall leave this till I hear the ship is going to sail, for if I send it now it will only stay in the Post Office... it is a very bad plan putting letters in boxes for they are so long on the voyage... I fancy there will be a ship off in a few days...".
