Lang Su-men/ Lang Pao-Chen (1763-1839): an early 19th century Qing Dynasty Chinese scroll painting, depicting crabs amongst naturalistic flora, with Chinese character stamp and description, dated 1814, 28.5 by 126cm. Provenance from the collection of Sondra Milne Henderson, with her original catalogue description translating the inscriptions: Upper Right: Authentic Ink Crabs, by Lang Su-men; dated 1814, 9th day of 9th moon; inscribed by Yen-Chai, Lower Left: (general sense) His friend Li Yu-an saw a screen of crabs by Lang Su-men in the collection of Chuang Shao-p'u. That Collection, having been scattered, is represented by this painting which was part of that screen. Signed Yen-chai, Note: Lan Su-men was a court official (who sat the Metropolitan exam in 1797), but also a distinguished painter, particularly well-known for his paintings of crabs in ink and wash. He was a native of Fukien.
