AN EGYPT 1882 PAIR AND LONG SERVICE MEDAL TO THE ROAYL NAVY. An Egypt Medal 1882-1889 with 1882 dated reverse and Alexandria 11th July Clasp named to W.A. Andrews A.B. H.M.S. Penelope, Khedive's Star, unnamed as issued and Victorian Long Service and Good Conduct Medal named to W. A. Andrews Boatman, H.M. Coastguard. William Arthur Andrews was born on the 11th December 1858 at Grosvenor Place, St Michaels, Bristol to John and Mary Andrews. His father being a boiler maker. He joined the Navy on the 19th April 1877 for a period of ten years, at the time he was working as a groom. He served aboard H.M.S. Penelope 4th June 1882 until January 1884 at which time he was a Leading Seaman. He transferred to the Coastguard in 1887 His character is recorded as either Exemplary or very good on all occasions. He served with the Reserve between 1902 and 1909. He died on the 22nd August 1921 at the age of 60 from chronic bronchitis and cardiac failure, at the time he was a boot and shoe repairer at Illogan in Cornwall. Sold with copied service record numbered 90684 and birth and death records. Provenance: part of a private collection of medals to Officers and Ratings of H.M.S. Penelope sold at auction in 2008 *Condition: Cleaned, contact marks, especially to reverse of LSGC.
