Born in (b. 1919-2010) in the Jiangsu province of eastern China. Wu Guanzhong (1919-2010) was an accomplished modern Chinese painter, widely respected and recognized for his importance in China’s contemporary art world, which was shaped by his ideas of abstraction. As an artist of unique sensibility and vision, his work embodies the synthesis of traditional Chinese and Western ideas and techniques. Wu Guanzhong had studied with Pan Tianshou (1897-1971) and Lin Fengmian (1900-91) at the Hangzhou Art Academy in the 1930s. He spent the wartime teaching in Chongqing and left the country in 1946 for three years’ study at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. While his colleague Zao Wou-Ki (Zhao Wuji, b.1921) remained in Paris, Wu Guanzhong decided to return to China in 1950. Upon his return he realized that his Western experience and artistic education was of little use to the socialist system and to Mao’s idea of a new China. Restricted from painting during the Cultural Revolution, he was rehabilitated in 1978.
