In both works Harlech Castle is seen from the south. The picturesque subject of Harlech Castle was painted by a number of the leading artists of the time including Turner and Girtin. A number of variants of Varley's views of Harlech Castle are known including examples at The Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester and The Lady Lever Art Gallery, Liverpool.
