CAPE TOWN
6 December
“Months have passed without my making any notes, perhaps too much has happened. I have travelled a lot, seen a lot and experienced a lot.”
“Once I returned to Cape Town after the exhibition, in September, I managed to find a studio, centrally located, 134 Long Street, on the first floor.”
“I worked very hard for about a month and a half, cultivated new friendships and made new enemies. Since my success some of my old friends have turned against me, or the friendship has just cooled off.”
“I left for Grahamstown on 29 October [1944] to visit [Professor] W.E.G. Louw for a month. He and [the composer] Rosa [Nepgen] even made a studio available in their huge house and insisted that I work - I actually just wanted a holiday!”
“I produced ten paintings in Grahamstown: Alter Ego [JM #51], They call her Tortoise [JM #53], Native Head, Mirrored Image [JM #54], Karoo Mother [JM #52], Malay Singers [JM #50], Self-portrait [JM#58], St Heronimus and Caecilia [JM #49], a portrait of Rosa [JM #70] and an unimportant smaller one. Four of these paintings are among my best works, and that’s a good harvest” (Diary 1: 96).
